A bay is a body of water connected to an ocean or lake, formed by an indentation of the shoreline. A large bay may be called a gulf, a sea, a sound, or a bight. A cove is a smaller circular or oval coastal inlet with a narrow entrance; some coves may be referred to as bays. A fjord is a particularly steep bay shaped by glacial activity. 1 Ha Long Bay – Vietnam
Halong Bay attracts visitors year-round with peak season between late May and early August. January to March is often cool and drizzly, and the ensuing fog can make visibility low, but adds bags of eerie atmosphere. From May to September tropical storms are frequent, and year-round tourist boats sometimes need to alter their itineraries, depending on the weather. November’s sunny blue-sky days and lack of crowds make it the best time to make a beeline here.

2 Zakynthos – Ionian Islands, Greece
The beach and bay at Gerakas are undoubtedly one of the best places on Zakynthos to visit. The sand is nice and the sea shelves gently. The beach is populated by turtles who nest there at certain times of the year and they put safeguards in place that mean you can’t walk on certain parts of the beach. Regardless, it’s amazing and one of my favourite locations on the island.

7 Concha Bay – San Sebastian, Spain
The Concha Bay is the image par excellence of San Sebastián: it is the most classic, the most photographed, the most visited of them all… The Concha Beach stands right in the centre of the city and stretches from the City Hall to the Pico del Loro (Parrot’s Beak). Its 1,500 metres of white sand are elegant and cosmopolitan (it will come as no surprise that the Concha is considered to be one of the best city beaches in Europe).
The other major feature of the bay is the Isla Santa Clara. Few cities can lay claim to an island smack bang in the centre of their bays and San Sebastián is one of them. The island has a small beach, walks to its unusual lighthouse, paths with picnic tables and a bar on the seaside terrace. Being so close to the bay means that you can swim out to the island all year round.

8 Bay Of Somme – Saint Valery Sur Somme, France
To the west of the Somme department lies the Picardy Coast, stretching 60km from the mouth of the Bresle in the south, to where the Authie flows into the sea in the north. And set between them, is the estuary of the Somme River, or Bay of Somme. The sea air often casts a delicate veil across the sky, giving the light in this region a very special quality, prized by artists. The high chalk cliffs give way to pebble beaches, then dunes, and finally marshland. Behind the coast, the rolling hills and valleys preserve a rich heritage.
The Bay of Somme is a member of the ‘Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World’, with its expanses of open water, marshes, dunes and saltwater meadows, where the sea and the land seem to merge.

11 Boka Kotorska Bay – Montenegro
Kotor is among one of the most beautiful of Montenegro’s coastal towns. It is surrounded by lofty mountains which peer over its Boka Kotorska (Bay of Kotor), Europe’s southernmost fjord. As the Mediterrannean’s only fjord, this bay was added to the list of the twenty-five most beautiful bays in the world in July 2000.
Boka Kotorska (Bay of Kotor) has long been celebrated in song and bears witness to a tempestuous history—a place where cultures and civilizations have often clashed. Situated on the southeast end of the bay, the town of Kotor can trace its origins back to ancient times. In the cave of Lipci, near the town of Risan, Neolithic period tools and ceramics, as well as cave wall paintings, have been found—a witness to the areas continuous inhebitance. Kotor has entered the list of world cultural heritage sites under the protection of UNESCO.

12 Bay Of Roses – Costa Brava, Spain
Beaches and coves, nature reserves and mountains, fascinating prehistoric monuments and ruins left by ancient settlers along this Mediterranean coast, museums, exceptional cuisine and an infrastructure for leisure and active tourism are its calling card.
The bay offers a coast of contrasts with more than six kilometres of beaches and coves and 50 kilometres of navigable canals. Its beaches offer shallow, clear waters.
However, this part of the Costa Brava contains other natural spaces such as Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, with a large number of native species of flora and fauna; the Cap de Creus, in the northern part of the Costa Brava; and the La Albera Mountains, with an interesting collection of megalithic monuments.
