9 Lesser Known Gorgeous Beaches You Must Visit
Playa Avellanas, Guanacaste – Costa Rica
Avellanas is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Tamarindo area, a tropical paradise ideal for those who enjoy exploring roads less travelled. Amid rising development in Costa Rica, this is certainly an untouched oasis where you can truly experience the “Pura Vida” way of life!
There is nothing but pristine beach wilderness, shaded by crooked old trees and backed by scrub, mangroves and dry forest. The long ribbon of beach unfolds until Tamarindo’s Playa Langosta in the north, and Playa Negra in the south.
Not only is Playa Avellanas a beautiful beach, but there’s also a great beach bar (with a resident pig) that is the perfect place to relax the day away with a frosty Imperial.
Quiet And Serenity Gorgeous Beach
At Playa Avellanas, you’ll enjoy beautiful light sand and rolling turquoise waves. The beach doesn’t see the same crowds as Tamarindo, so there’s always a place to put down a towel.
Some stretches are rocky and feature tide pools, other parts have powdery white coral sand and turquoise water. As the sea bottom drops gently and there aren’t many underwater rocks Avellanas is a nice beach for bathing.
Ideal Surfing Paradise for Surfers
In front of the river mouth, El Estero de Avellanas is supposedly one of the best surf spots in Costa Rica. El Estero offers rights and lefts which surf over reef and sandy bottom, forming perfect A-frames. Best surfed in dry season and on a low incoming tide.
Surfing is one of the most popular activities, and the beach has breaks for both experts and beginners. If you’re looking to take a lesson, there are plenty of schools in the small town to choose from.
But not to worry, if you are not an experienced surfer you can also enjoy the amazing nature, beautiful golden sand and turquoise water that Avellanas offer. It is definitely the go to place to relax, lie-back under abundant palm trees lining the coast and providing a welcome shade on the beach; read a good book and just be one with nature.
Birding & Wildlife Watching
Playa Avellanas is home to a wide variety of animals. There is a large troop of howler monkeys that lives in the mango trees, and it is not uncommon to see more than 5 iguanas a day! There are many beautiful birds and butterflies, and vibrant purple-and-orange crabs that live in the mangroves beside the boardwalk. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you may even be lucky enough to spot a dolphin playing in the waves, or see the majestic form of a humpback whale.
This beach is magical, please do yourself a favor if you are visiting Tamarindo and make a trip over to Avellana. No nightlife at all so don’t come looking to party all night. This is the relaxed vibe at its best. Be sure to stop at The Beach Box for some great food after your time on the beach or in the water.
